The wheels will come off during the tire rotation so it's only a matter of them observing the brakes condition. Once again, most shops perform this as a free service to you while having your oil changed. Checking the brakes is necessary in determining how safe your vehicle is.

Examine your potential market. Do you have any connections at body shops, detail shops, wholesalers, car dealers, service centers, etc who will let you potentially do work for them? Think about your demographics. Are your potential retail customers making decent money? Create a list of connections, call them all and let them know you are getting trained.
Examine your potential competition. How many PDR techs are there in your area, and are they operating in your potential market? What are they charging? How much rapport does your competition have locally with your potential market? Keep notes.
Find out your states' requirements. You may need business insurance. You may need a sales license, you may need many things. Go to a local dealer and ask the office manager what their dealer requires from any of it's vendors (you in the future).
Register a business name. Go to your state's governmental website and search for info about registering a business. Go through the process of registration. With a PDR name, it should use words that tie in to the PDR industry. Dings, dents, PDR, dent repair, etc.
Order business materials. You will need business cards, invoices, and possibly some accounting items.

Where would the world be today without the luxury of Bondo. Ever since I can remember, well 20 years or so, it has been all the hype. You have yourself a nice looking muscle car or any car for that matter and the first thing everyone wants to know, even if they don't say it is " how much bondo, looks really nice, hmm how much bondo, bondo bucket?" Well I'm here to say that bondo is an absolute necessity if you are going to have a nice looking, straight paneled ride.

Let's get one thing straight about the use of body fillers (bondo). It is not, and I repeat not for cars that have rust. It is not for cars that have holes in them. That is what you have a welder and patch panels for. If you think bondo will hold or last over a hole of any size you'll be assuredly let down. All those hopes and dreams of having that ugly hole patched will certainly come back and haunt you. If not today, which is sometimes all the longer it takes, give it a year. Moisture will have a field day pushing out the plastic filler and leave you again worse off with a rusty, bubbling, bondo'd up sick looking disgusting scabby eye sore! - geez London "take that bondo" :)

Bondo, or plastic filler, body filler, call it what you want is great stuff, but it is made to smooth out panels. It's a filler in the sense that it fills waves and imperfections in metal. It doesn't take the place of it. It is a cheap and easy replacement for the use of lead. If you have holes you really need metal to patch them, and truthfully it's much quicker to simply cut a piece of metal and tack it in there. It will last if done right for years, especially if you keep it dry and clean. If you live where I do near the great lakes "keep it out of the salt".

All body fillers are basically the same. Some claim to be better than others, but seeing as we're not patching holes anymore with it, I go for the one that sands the easiest. These are known as the light weight body fillers. They usually sand quite easy, and they won't clog up the sand paper nearly as bad as the heavy weight (gold) fillers. I personally stay away from the 'bondo' brand, don't know why really, maybe it's the nightmarish name from my past, but that's neither here nor there, I go with the Evercoat brand. I have had great success over the years and see no need to change. They haven't been able to improve too much on it over the past 15 years.

I have experimented with most brands and weights over the years and one thing they have in common is how to mix it. The single most greatest factor in mixing bondo is the temperature where you're using it. If it is 60 degrees in the shop it will take 15-20 minutes or longer to set up, if it's 80-85 degrees where you are, you have just enough time to mix it fast and run to get it spread. Mixing is the standard 1 inch ribbon of hardener / golf ball size filler. If it's hot, cut back a tad. If it's cold, DON' T add more for it won't help. That can and usually will create pinholes and gummy bondo that will not sand well. You are forced to let it harden on it's own or put some heat on it. Heat the panel first a little if you can, it will help at least to get it to start setting up. Have patience, if you get on it right away it may let go, or flake off the panel and you'll be starting over. Let it bond to the panel thoroughly. Take your nail or a pocket knife and scratch on it. I usually nurse it awhile till it sets up just enough where I can carve any mess I made out of it spreading it , off. It saves time when it comes to sanding.

Without a doubt transmissions are the most expensive item to repair on a vehicle. Sometimes it is even more expensive to replace a transmission than an entire engine.

Since there is nothing cheap about transmission repair it is highly suggested you take care of the one you currently have. All it takes a little time and effort.

One of the easiest and cost effective ways to maintain your transmission is making sure the fluid inside of it is good and up to the proper level.

Transmission fluid is supposed to be a bright red color. The further is gets away from this color the worse it is. When it starts to turn a dark red it is still okay but by the time it is brown it needs to be changed. This is the substance that lubricates your transmission and if the properties inside of it have worn out then the moving metal parts it lubricates will start to wear out.

The level should be within range as well. You want to make certain that not only is the fluid still has lubricity but there is enough in there to actually do the lubricating. Some people do not check the level and are therefore ridding around 5-7 quarts under the optimal mark.

Auto cylinder compression tests and testing can be the simplest, easiest and overall quick evaluations of the condition of the motor in a vehicle that you can do. On top of that compression testing of an auto engine is fast, cheap and what might be called "noninvasive" that is you do not have to take apart half of the engine.

Yet many inexperienced and backyard mechanics often do not know the first thing about interpreting results of compression tests. They may know how to complete the full test - yet really are in the dark about what results mean.

First - take the time and effort to compare the compression readings with the car makers' specifications and specs. These can be obtained either from the manual, a source book, online at the auto manufacturers' website or as a last resort your neighborhood garage mechanic or dealership service department. Basically your readings should be within the tolerances allowed.

In the situation and event that your engine does show low levels and readings of compression. That is less than 100 psi (pounds per square inch) or alternatively high compression readings, then you can almost count on the eventuality internal engine repair work is probably necessary and most likely is around the corner. If the compression testing was done as standard workup in routine maintenance and you were considering an automotive motor tune-up, then it may well be a good use of time and your resources to lay that idea aside. Go work on another vehicle.

If the compression readings are low or uneven in any of the motors' cylinders, a mechanics tip is to add a tablespoon of engine oil through the spark plug openings of the affected cylinders and then recheck the compression. If the compression readings improve, then it is most likely the case that the cylinder valves are probably "sticking", seated poorly or alternatively burned. The experienced owner of a string of auto dealerships whose practical expertise in the auto and auto body shop industry states that in his experience valves are bad ten times more often than rings. If the compression is low in two adjacent cylinders, the cylinder head gaskets between these cylinders are mot likely blown. Alternatively high compression readings usually indicate a buildup of carbon deposits in the compression chambers of the cylinder of the engine.

Over time, one's car paint will inevitably get scratched. These unsightly marks can depreciate value and weaken the car's finish. Left unattended, some deeper scratches can even lead to rust. No one wants rust on their car as this can be costly to repair.

Luckily, the DIY auto painter can easily repair car most minor scratches and nicks in his or her home garage. You can sometimes polish these out as long as they are not deep and paint is still visible under the blemish. If this is the case, you are in luck as no further reading is necessary.

Unfortunately, if you see primer or bare metal under the scratch, a new paint application will be necessary. The first thing you will need is a brush from a touch-up bottle to apply the paint to these scratches and other small nicks. In times past, the DIY auto painter would use dabs of clear nail polish to cover these minor scratches after.

Both of these can generally be found in your local auto body paint and parts store. It would be wise to ask for help when selecting the correct touch-up bottle as they can match up the car's color code with what you are in need of. In addition, they will have invaluable information on how to repair car scratches yourself.

Remember there is nothing wrong with asking questions. When deciding whether or not to repair car scratches yourself, make sure you do not let too much time pass. Many scratches will allow oxidation to wreak havoc with your paint job. This is also why nail polish was used as it would protect the finish from peeling.
